Truck died :/

Post by 1guydude »

Well my truck died on me a cpl nights ago.
I thought it lost power but when i pulled the battery. It tested good and had 75% still on it after i sat and chugged on it.

I need to check for fuel and spark. Anything else?
It kinda slow chugged to nothing when it died.
Hopefully i can get someone to watch a spark plug when i turn it. See if its sparking.

Ill push the gas down and hopefully they will see gas squirting in the carb...

I messed with it a little the other day after work and the solenoid was smoking a little...
Any help or tips is appreciated. I sure hope i didnt loose compression and my motor really died.

Not a 100% guarantee without seeing the truck, but I suspect it's probably ignition or fuel related. Loss of compression doesn't happen instantaneously unless something catastrophic happens. I've had a few mechanical pumps crap out on me without warning, so maybe pull the coil wire and have someone crank it with the fuel line emptying into a container.
If it was me, I'd replace that solenoid and get the starter tested. Maybe check your cables and grounds too.

Only thing i found loose was the solenoid to the fender... i put washers on the screws and tightened it back up. Wasnt hanging or anything put i could finger tighten or loosen one screw.

I thought maybe my batt or hot wire to coil/distributor came off but it was still hooked up.

Would my solenoid crapping out on me cause my truck to die? I thought that was for starting and nothing more.

This would or will b my 2nd fuel pump. Its already been replaced. 3rd or so solenoid and 2nd starter. Im sure my starters good as it chugs and spins it. Just dosent turn over and fire...
I believe as well its fuel or ignition. Hopefully ill find some more time to look at it soon.

Wires were all good. Solenoid. Starter. Battery. Distributor. Grounds. Alt. All seemed tight and hooked up.
I didnt look much under the dash.

If the solenoid (or anything else electrical) is smoking, you have a short somewhere.

Fuel pump is easy to check. Disconnect the fuel line from the carb, put it in a bucket, and crank the engine. If you get gas in the bucket, the pump is fine. If you don't, the pump is bad, or the line is blocked.

Well ill check as much as i can for a short. Ive been shocked by my distributor so ur prob right. Lol

I cranked with my batt hooked and unhooked to my distributor. Pumped it. Got no gas in the mcdonalds cup i put at the end of my hardline from the pump to the carb :/
Next week i will get on this and ill have a lot more parts as well to work on.
This pump isnt even a yr old...

I had two brand new pumps die in less than a year so don't feel bad.

hopefully its just clogged up. I pulled my old fuel sender unit without a float on it so Im thinking that deteriorated inside there or rusted up or something. Gonna check the filter on the bottom of the pump and lines prior...

I would expect a clogged line or filter (if you have a in-line filter before the pump). The only time I had a problem with a pump was when I had condensation in the oil. The rubber lines probably need changing, anyway.

When both of mine went bad, the inline filter showed nothing making it's way through that might have caused a blockage. Next time around, I'm going electric and fitting a cut off switch as an added theft deterrent.
