302 engine names

Post by mytmatt »

Is this gentleman misinformed, or am I just unaware of this class of 302 engines?

*shrug*

302 and 351W are mostly the same engine except the Windsor has a taller block, longer stroke, etc...

I'd ask for clarification if it is a 302, or a 351W.

Yeah, only special 302 I know if is the Boss 302.

Yeah, I know of the 351 Windsor, just not sure if there was a 302 by the same name.

On the same topic, has anyone had any experience with using 351 Windsor heads on 302/289s? I have heard wildly conflicting stories about this as a performance mod. As I understand it, they're a bolt-on, as opposed to 351 Cleveland heads, which need machining to go on a 302/289 (as I think happened with the Boss 302 of fame and legend).

That head question depends on the head year. The 351 heads generally have a bigger bolt hole than the 302. There are bolts that have the same thread as a 302, but a bigger shank like the 351 so you can use them on a 302. I think you can get them through ARP.

I can't give you mor ethan that. If you use a 302 head on a 351 you have to drill out the bolt holes to accept the larger bolts.

There are lots of performace books out there that can tell you more, and about the head swap.

Ok guys let me tell ya all, the 302 Windsor was commonly called that before the 351W came out. Then it kinda faded because the Windsor name was used to clarify between the two 351's when the Cleveland engine came out in '70. I still call the 302 a Windsor.

BTW that's a nice combo, the van Windsor and C6.

The 'Windsor' name comes from the casting plant in Windsor, Ontario where the small blocks (302,351) were made. Betcha can't guess where the 351C was made :hmm: :P

WHAT? Boys, boys you telling me you never herd of the windsor 90 degree small block family.
The small blocks ford has made since the early 60's . Fords first modern power plant. Man you would think a bunch of North Americans would Know about the longest running engine family ford has ever made. Named after the plant of origin in Windsor. The 221, 260, 289, 302, 5.0l, and big brother 351.
WHAT ?
