C6 Tranny installation questions

Post by TexasVine »

I have a stock 1967 F100 long bed with a 352. I am wanting to change the current 4 speed (on the floor) to a C6 automatic transmission.

Will I need to make any frame modifications? What will I need besides the C6 unit and new shift leakage?

Thanks for any comments or advise.

flywheel to flexplate.
automatic steering column for shifter.
fe big block c6 case.
automatic cross member. I dunno if the manual trans one can be adapted.
shorten the driveshaft id imagine?
automatic pedal assembly? I dunno if you can simply omit the clutch pedal from the pack?
maybe a new speedo cable.
if your radiator doesnt have a trans fluid cooler in the lower tank, you would need to replace it with one that does or mount a stand alone fluid to air cooler.
possible a different trans tunnel for in the cab?
hopefully the exhaust isnt ran close to the manual trans that would cause interference issues with the bigger automatic.
Thats what comes to mind but I could be missing something

Photoshot wins again!!! (I had the pics explaining this before they stole them from me). :cuss:

You won't have to change the tranny tunnel cover to go from the 4-speed to the C-6, (unless you want to patch the large hole left by the 4 speed shifter easier than a plate of sheet metal to cover the hole). My NP had the low tunnel cover, (there is also a taller tunnel cover as Rich suggests) and I replaced it with a low tunnel cover from an automatic column truck so I had a good mounting point for my B & M "ghetto shifter" (as some folks here call floor shifters).
B & M incorporates your back up light and neutral safety switch into the truckshifter making that part of your truck easier.
But you do want the tunnel cover off as the tranny goes in as that makes the job so...much easier, (yeah pull the seat and the carpet or floor mat to get to that point is required too) not for the faint of heart).
