Is this booster salvageable?

Post by SMH1970 »

hi everyone,

I am swapping my manual drum setup on my 1970 Sport Custom 2WD over to power disc brakes and have obtained most of the parts from a 1979 donor. All the big parts are installed (radius arms, spindles, new rotors, etc) but I'm wondering if the booster is salvageable. It seems in decent shape but I've noticed a couple of things I though I should run by some experts.

1. there was a bit of brake fluid inside the booster, and I was wondering if this is a concern (it may have been a combination of water and brake fluid, as the donor truck had not been roadworthy for quite some time)

2. I've also noticed that the rubber plunger is missing from the end of the pushrod - at least I think it is supposed to have a rubber plunger - see photo (sorry if these part names aren't correct)

I know that in a perfect world I probably should trade the core in for a new booster, but I'd like to use as much of the old parts as possible, at least until I get her on the road again.
I also have the 1979 master cylinder, which I also should likey replace - please advise.

I think getting a new booster and master cylinder should be mandatory. especially if you have any doubts. you can either bolt on the old one and may have to do that job over again or just bolt in a new one. plus any money spent on brakes is money well spent. :2cents:

yes, this makes a lot of sense - just needed someone to tell me directly

I've used a lot of the information from various posts here on Fordification to get my plan together, and have been searching for the booster and MC that Ultraranger recommended in his posts: Booster = 54-73112 ('75 F35) + MC = M3246 ('95 Explorer). I'm having trouble finding decent prices (or what I feel to be decent prices), here in Canada.

Does anyone have suggestions as to possible substitutes for the booster and MC? I'm guessing there must be other options?

thanks
