component speakers in doors sound bad

Post by morganater »

I recently installed My radio with a volvo mounting kit into my original dash location. I cut some holes in my doors for component speakers, and installed and sealed the up well to the door panels. The problem is, You cant turn them up at all before they start bottoming out. I think this may be becuase the doors arent sealed? or is it because the chamber is simply too big? It sounds terrible and I want to fix this, does anyone know?

When you say component speakers, were they designed to mount in a sealed or a vented enclosure? Usually base speakers are, their suspension is so loose they need a sealed or vented box to operate properly and sound right. The two work as a system. The air behind the speaker acts as a spring to tighten up the suspension.

And also the speakers won't last without them. Door speakers have a rough life anyway and then if they are open to the inside of the door you have to have perfect outside wiper seals to keep moisure out but there will still be some condensation in there. You will notice newer trucks have the door speakers mountec high and foreward. Less impact from door slamming and up higher for better sound distribution.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

Hey All
just an idea on speaker mounting... In my 72 F-model , it had round holes not in door put in removeable panels, I installed some sony's fully incased in aluminm(salvaged out of my'80 model after the crash and they were in it when i bought it) designed at the time for touring bike fairing applications as best i remember almost 15 years ago... they sounded great and where really durable... and then when i actually purchased new junk i ran across an idea from a geek sale guy at best-buy when they first came to texas ,He suggested a 4x10 or twelve I forget they fit perfect in the area below the rear inner roof line seam and above rear window and the natrual aucoustics of the truck ,being open down rear pillar post area behind doors and gas tank , i actually took out the door speaker and add small tweeters in front kick panels, hada buddy that will swear to this day i had speakers hidden under seat and just would show them .. they were powered by a stock craig power play am/fm cassette ...alreasy looking for simular type speaker for my new girl "2ndTime'round" 69 step side . I know i probley am doing injustice to the tin lovers out there by cutting holes in that area but they look like they were born thereand the sound is awsome thinkin bout 4 this time 2 across top, 2 down rear pillar area

You could try your hand at fiberglass...Im designing a set of door panels for my 72 F100. I dont want to cut any holes in the door but I would like to add some speakers. Heres a pic of the panels I made for my Ford Escort...again, no holes in the door, but I have room for an Alpine DDDrive 6.5" midbass, DDDRive 4" midrange and 1" softdome tweeters right in the door.
