Chevrolet 14 bolt

Post by svslow »

Hello, I'm looking for any information from anyone who has put a 14 bolt rear ended in their truck. I have a 67' f250 with Dana 60s front and rear. I'm working on changing rear ends. Anyone have any info? Which year make and model truck they used? Pics?

I don't know about the Chebbie but I installed 10.25 Sterling out of a '90's F-350. Full range of gears and they even have posi in some. Pretty much a direct swap with the exception of using the larger U joints. I think they were 1350 series which was the same as my Dodge 47rh. They do make conversion U joints so that shouldn't be a big deal.

The sterling. By bolt in do you mean the spring perches don't need to be moved, and I can literally just bolt it in?

I think the spring perches are too wide for your truck.
I hate to say it but the chevy 14 bolt depending on the year (pre 87 )might line up.
I don't know for sure, but the frames are narrower than the newer Fords.

Up through the early 90's 350 had the narrow frame. Pretty easy to measure the perch width to be sure. Mine came from a EFI truck.

There were typically a couple different versions. Single axle, narrow dual for commercial trucks (tow, box etc) and wide dual axle for dually pickups. I'm pretty sure the commercial stuff was narrow but am not sure about the others.

You want the cab and chassis one for the narrower perches, its the same width as the stranded 10.25.

I went to a junk yard and measured a few sterlings. They came out to 45" center hole to center hole on the spring perches. It makes it between 4-5 inches too wide for my rear springs.

This is mine. 34" frame outside width. @ 40.25" spring perch centerline. I used the '70 bottom plate with the integral shock mounts to make things easier. I checked and the tag doesn't have a date code but you can see that it has the antilock brake speed sensor making it a newer 90's axle. Truth in advertising I just wandered around my buddy's axle pile at his farm until I found one the correct width and brought it home. Hope this helps.

I couldn't find a good sterling in town but I found this 14 bolt with a locker for $300. I did a disk brake conversion and a tom woods double cardan drive shaft. It worked out awesome.

As much as I hate chevy parts in a ford... the 14 bolt FF is one thing they did better. Can't beat one for the money, availability and toughness. I'm currently doing this on my 71. Give ruffstuffspecialties a call. They make a simple swap kit and can do perches, plates and u bolts for the 2 1/4 inch wide springs. Weld em where they need to be and bolt it up. They have a disc brake conversion also. No matter what axle you use, you will have to move the perches in, move shock mounts and brake lines. Even the Dana 60 front axle from a 78 truck I have that is supposed to be a bolt in deal has some things that need moved around a bit. None of it is a big deal to do though. My welding skills are nothing to call home about but even I can handle it
