Paint Codes

Post by 71Ford100 »

What does ML stand for? Also does anybody have all of the two tone paint codes for 1971.

M1 would indicate a tu-tone paint job, using Wimbleton White (M) and Calypso Coral (1). The M1 code can mean either a regular tu-tone (roof only is painted the second code color), a deluxe tu-tone (lower body side is painted the first code color) or a combination tu-tone (lower body side and roof are painted the first code color).

I'm working on getting the tu-tone paint codes listed to the '71 VIN data page. This should be finished up in the near future and will include all the tu-tone codes.

Barry: according to the literature I have (and as we all know it's been known to mislead a time or two) there was no 'L' code available on pickups for '71. in fact, there was no 'L' code available for any van or Bronco either.

Well, I've been doing some more looking and comparing the '72 paint codes, and have updated the 1972 VIN data page with my findings...but I've found some discrepancies. Take a look at the new thread I started here, which outlines some of what I've found:

http://fordification.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9853

According to the PPG sheet at Bumpsides (and another that I've posted to the '72 VIN data page), code "L" is indeed Holly Green, but that sheet shows all codes used on trucks, vans and Broncos, and doesn't specify which application got that color/code. And the factory '72 paint chip brochure I have doesn't even list a code "L" at all...and this brochure ALSO lists all codes for trucks, vans and Broncos. So right now, your guess is as good as mine. Read the thread I started at the link above and see if you (or anyone) can help sort this out so we can get the info on the VIN data page as correct as possible.

"L" Dark Green was available 64-72 per the Ford Truck Master Parts Catalog.

Okay, now I have a problem. I just got the build sheet for my truck and here is what it says for the color.

Bright Medium Blu-Exterior Color
Platinum Accent Color
Blue cab and trim
Deluxe tutone paint

The interior is blue, seat, one armrest, dashpad, metal door panels etc. The exterior paint is blue and white one the back of the cab and front of bed. Under the door is a dark green and other places. The serial tag has been painted over so I belive it is original. The bed and doors have holes for trim fenders don't. Fenders are the same color as the paint under the blue.

That is pretty odd, "Bright Medium Blue" is the same color as "Bahama Blue" should be code 6.

I've never seen "platnium" refering to an old Ford, but according to the 72 color page it would be "N" same as "Diamond blue"

I'm wondering if thers any possibility that your "ML" was "7N"?

Does the VIN on the build sheet match the VIN on your door tag? I think I'd be checking the right top side of the frame for a VIN there. (Near where the crossmember is IIRC)

:hmm: :? :hmm:
