Sound Deadening the doors?

Post by Ks Highboy »

I am not sure what to use for sound deadening my doors. I just don't really want to pay BIG money for these Dynomat type products. I did buy some of the self adhesive foil backed foam from Lowes and lined my door panels. Its the Frost King stuff for duct work. I'm just not sure I want to put this on the inside of my doors where the foam will be exposed to abit of moisture and cause problems. I also bought some of the Reflective insulation that is like bubble wrap. But, I just don't think this will do much for sound. It might be OK for heat purposes but I just can't see it making the cab quieter. Just don't want to use something that will trap moisture and cause rust . What have you guys found? Thanks

Somebody suggested here, and what I used was elastomeric roof paint with some real fine grit in it...Coated as much of the inside of the doors as I could reach with a brush...Careful, though, If you put too much on it'll start dripping out the weep holes at the bottom of the doors...I also made new thicker door panels and put carpet and padding to replace the rubber mat, as well as new rubber door gaskets... So while it's much quieter, don't know what to give credit to...One thing NOT to do----is put carpeting on the bottom of the door area below the panel....I kept blaming the hard-to-shut-doors on the new door gaskets, until today, when I pulled the carpet off, and now my doors shut fine...
This is the point...I'm....talking about everybody! I'm talking about form! I'm talking about content! I'm talking about interrelationships! I'm talking about God, the devil, hell, heaven!!!! Do you understand???? Finally!!!!

I have 1/2 closed cell Polyethylene Foam in my doors now.
I worked as a shipping supervisor and we received and shipped parts shipped with this as packing.
I'm sure 1/4 would be more than sufficient like I got it free so bigger the better.
you have to cut it in two pc's to fit it in the hole in the door.
used 3m contact adhesive to attach it.
really works well I have 2.2 lb density.
you can get a 4x8 sheet a any shipping/box supplier for cheep not sure any more but I think we paid around 12 bucks but in came in bulk.
we had a company that picked up our used packing if you found a place in your area that did that you could probably get it free.
here a link to what it looks like http://www.closedcellfoams.com/polyethylene.html.
I am using the white stuff.
if you decide to go this route make sure the window rolls down before putting back together.
I made this mistake and had to open it up and shave a little for the runners to clear.

good luck!

Look up Fat Man on Ebay. It is a product just like Dynomat at a fraction of the cost. I bought a 100 square feet for 130 shipped. I plan on lining the floor, ceiling, firewall, and inside the doors.

I used the same thing on my floor one roll did both floor pans and sides of the trans hump. It seemed to quiet it down a little bit but I'm gonna do to layers.

Double layer the firewall and I bet you'll get quite a differance!

I looked at the peel and stick stuff from lowes today. Just couldn't make myself buy it. Plus, that stuff has alot of tar odor. Plus, if you need to double layer I don't see the cost savings. I can get 50sq ft of Fatmat for $79 and think I'll go this way. If I doubled layered the lowes stuff I would have to buy quite few rolls to do the door, roof, floor, behind the tank.

There are tons of guys running it on the off-road forums, and a few other forums I've found by googling. They say it will have a slight tar smell for a few days then it will be totally gone, and that is coming from guys in the desert in so-cal, where it gets really hot. You don't have to double layer it, but it probably helps.
If you have the money for the really expesnive stuff then by all means go all out.
