Ot urethane windshield replacement
ok so its not putting a windshield in. but ihave a piece of trim that was supposed to go under the windshield when we put it in and it came out and tore off going down the road. so today i picked up a piece of trim from another similar car and i want to glue it to top of the windshield space.(where the old trim came out of). we had siliconed the last one in and it didnt hold very well. it came off and ripped anyway. so i am thinking about using windshield urethane to hold it down and seal it to the windshield place where the old trim was. do you think it will work? how will i be able to hold the trim down long enough for the urethane to dry for 24 hours? the windhsield is at a good slope. and i'm not sure how to put pressure on the trim so that it will embled itself in the urethane good enough to hold going down the highway. i dont want it ripping off again.

Grab ya some Lexelle, glue it down, throw a few pieces of masking tape over it. Next day, pull the tape off and it's STUCK.

Is it just that rubber trim that goes on most cars at the top? Urethane will do fine as long as you let it dry for a day. Pics of trim would be great. I install windshields for job, so I have had many problems during my first few months LOL.

it is a rubber piece of trim with a piece of stainless on the outside of the rubber. the stainless onl yfits on the rubber. so the rubber will be the only thing in contact with the glass or roof.
Re: Ot urethane windshield replacement
Yes, well thats a pretty big mistake to be honest. When you hit a bump that rubber actually cushions. Most likely it will not cause a problem, but it can. But just slightly cut off that bottom piece that wraps around the windshield, and put a very small bead of urethane across the top. Then tape it on, that should help cushion it from breaking. With that urethane theres no way that rubber will come off.

i dont want the rubber to come off unless its time to replace the windshield then it can be cut off for all i care. becasue then it will have the correct new tirm installed on it.
Re: Ot urethane windshield replacement
Those pieces of trim come with the windshield when you purchase them anyways, or at least they are suppose to. There is no problem with urethaning it down. Just tape it, and dont drive probably for a day.

Oh I gotcha, yea your sorta screwed there. You have to by another one, unless your good and can lay a good looking bead of urethane like me LOL.

that is what was tried last time and it didnt work. but i am going to make it work this time.
Re: Ot urethane windshield replacement
Wierd, urethane always worked for me. Could be the brand type. Also if there is any rust, or oily substance it wont stick either, but Im sure you know that.

yeah i didnt do it the first time. i haveno idea how it was done the first time. when i do it it will stick and work. i just wasnt sure how to get enough pressure on it to make it embed itself in the urethane.
Re: Ot urethane windshield replacement
Oh, push hard and tape. Yea, I have never actually had this problem, but I have had rubbers break, and I had to urethane them.

i fi buy the urethane in a caulking tube and use just a little of it. but i need to do another windshield. how long can i leave the tube open and it not clog up? do i need to cap the end of the tube for a few days or maybe a month if that is when i use the tube again? how long can it set and not get permantly clogged up?
