Put them underneath the door panels.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the factory door speaker installation.

Here is a pic of my tunes center that I built. I left the AM in dash to stay original. (68 Camper Special). Of course this works as long as you don't have a floor shift.

I built some boxes and put 6x9's on the side of the seat on that sloped side of the seat hump. Just put 1 screw in each one into the metal from the inside of the box. Then put some 5" rounds in boxes tucked up under the edge of the seat in front on both sides. The boxes had tails on 'em that wedged them under the seat. I never move my seat so they stayed put. I've since swapped seats so the boxes got trashed in the process. So I hung a piece of 1/2" plywood under the dash, in the middle and mounted the 6x9's side by side, on their ends. Looks pretty hokey but works till I can do better. Would love to put in an overhead console!

I have had 6x9's in my doors for 20 or some odd years. I finally pulled the old Pioneers out last year and put in new Infinitys. I just have a Sony Explode am/fm/cd player but it sounds great with good bass.
I placed them so I didn't have to cut the doors at all and my windows clear fine. I have a SportCustom that came with the black vinyl door panels but they were looking bad anyway so I replaced them with the painted door panels with the chrome trim several years back. They have good stereo separation and sound very good to me. I am not the type that you can hear from 5 miles away though

My 70 has them mounted right above the cab-mounted tank. Which, the more I think about it, I should relocate them. It came with them mounted there... A short and a small gas leak may end up with my wife cashing in on my life insurance policies...
