Need opinions on interior color!!

Post by fomocoguy »

Ok, so I'm re-doing all the interior on my crew and I need some opinions on what shade of white to use, but first I should explain what I'm doing.

I have removed the door panels, glove box, ash tray, and gauges while the seats are out being upholstered in black. Everything that is left (cab inside walls, doors, front of dash) is getting sprayed with spray on bedliner. It makes for a nice satin textured finish that is tough as nails, and so far it's looking great. Now, the plan is to spray the door panels, glove box door, ash tray, and F600 gauge cluster in gloss white. It will also have a white headliner.

Here's the problem: I can't decide what shade of white to spray it in. If you were me, do you think you would use a pure white or more of a creamy white, like wimbledon white? I think the wimbledon may give it a more "vintage" look, but I'm not sure how it will look with the black, and I suppose I'll have to paint whatever I use for a headliner to match it if I go wimbledon. Any thoughts?

I think a creamier color, such as Wimbledon white would look really good, even against the black spray on liner stuff

Curious why you are spraying the interior with bed liner? Seems to be a 'fad' with the 4WD guys but is it something you'll be willing to live with for years and years?

I'd let them spray the glove box and ash tray as well for a more uniform look. Then a creamy white for the doors or the exterior color. What colors will the exterior be?

Good evening Joe,

If it were up to me, I'd go with Wimbledon White. As you've mentioned, it would add vintage appeal. That, and I'm pretty sure most shades of white look completely white in the absence of other whites (that's an oddball sentence but I think you get the idea). :)

Knowing your exterior color (as Jamie asked) might change my mind though.

I've used the spray on bedliner for numerous projects and there are numerous reasons I like it. Keep in mind, I'm not talking about having a bedliner shop do it (like line-x). I'm talking about duplicolor bedliner in an aerosol can. I know it sounds like a bad idea at first, but the stuff sprays nice and uniform with just enough texture that you know that it's supposed to be that way. It will cover in one coat, and once cured it's tougher than paint, but still could be stripped without too much trouble later. The funny thing is it works great for lots of things, but in my opinion it's not a great bed liner. I did a bed with it before and big logs and sharp edges would still take it off. As for living with it for years, that's why I picked these colors. I figure they will work with whatever color I decide to go with on the outside. For now I'm keeping the olive drab. Another thing I like about the spray liner and the olive drab is that touch up is a cinch.

As for the glove box and doors, I will paint them first I think. Then if it doesn't look very uniform I can spray them with the bedliner in about five minutes.
You may have seen this pic in my project thread, but if not here's a shot of how the bedliner stuff looks so far:

The best part is it goes right over bare metal or paint and covers up most any minor imperfection. Looks pretty much like satin black when dry.

Thanks for the input Robroy! I know what you mean about the shade. One thing you made me think of is that the roof on the outside will still be pure white and I don't plan on changing that, so if you were looking in from 10 feet away you'd probably see two shades of white. As for the exterior, it's staying olive drab for now. I've grown quite accustomed to not having to wax the beast!

Hmm I'm pretty set on white but I honestly hadn't really thought about metallic grey... :maybe:

That's a hard one for me. The 'Home Ec.' side of me likes to see colors compliment each other vs. clash / overwhelm.

I think the inside would look great if you could paint over the bedliner with the original green color. I used the 'lizard skin' on my '71 cab and it looked really nice in gloss blue but the bad side was the lizard skin isn't very tough. Mine was on the firewall so it should last.

I think a satin olive green paint over the bedliner would turn out nice inside and it would touch up pretty easily if scuffed. You could do the door panels in white, base / clear for best wear. A black dash and armrests would compliment the black seats and of course the white headliner and sun visors.

Heck, toss in some bling with the sport custom door trim rings and my polished ash tray pull and dome lamp and I don't think any color or texture would overpower the interior.

i deleted my opinion. on what your doing. and i have no suggestion as to what shade of white to use.

however the closer to a dark shade of white you went the more closer it might look as it was a match to the black. the more brighter it is might make it look out of place. to me anyway.

i have seen door panels that have been sprayed lightly with bedliner material. and it looked good. with the rest of the cab another color altogether. one truck was yellow with black door panels. and i think the other may have been white with black door panels.

I actually was looking at my ugly ash tray pull yesterday and was thinking about buying one from you. Then it would have a chrome button on the glove box, a shiny bit on the ash tray, and the chrome horn button. I've already got a new chrome bezel and lens on the way, along with a slew of other stuff.

I know it's a different color scheme and not what most people are used to seeing, but I have faith it's going to look real nice. After everyones input I'm leaning toward the creamier white. I want it to have a vintage look and I think it will accomplish that. Plus, I really think it will look neat to have all those parts "pop" out at you. Worst case I do it, hate it, and repaint the white parts in olive drab.

I suppose if I did do those parts in olive drab, then I could easily respray them if I ever change the color.......  :maybe: This is hurting my head

Ok, I have an idea. I have a couple extra door panels for the back, so what I'm going to do is shoot one in wimbledon and one in olive drab, then take pics and set up a pole and take votes. It's the only way to solve this dilemma. Plus maybe it will help me decide.

I look forward to seeing the panels and your poll results. Personally, I think you can't go too wrong with the Wimbledon white. I agree with the others that it will keep a somewhat vintage look. Tough decisions! :?

After getting the black all done and having a good look at her, I think olive drab is too dark. I think a nice Wimbledon white will be a nice contrast to all the black, and by the time the headliner is done it will be pretty even and not look to dark in there.

Wimbledon it is. Thanks guys!
