Are you referring to the steering column mast jacket that houses the steering mechanism? This is the part of the steering assembly that's visible inside your cab.
If this is what you're referring to, you can install your parts inside of the chrome steering column mast jacket.

I just noticed you've placed an ad in the parts wanted section for a chrome shifter column. Are you looking for a chrome column mast jacket or just the shift lever and turn indicator stock?
I've got two 1970 F250's, one is a Ranger XLT and the other is a Ranger and neither one of them has a chrome mast jacket, but they both have chrome shift levers and chrome turn indicator wands.
I don't believe that Ford ever put a chrome steering mast jacket in our era trucks...I could be wrong and others will chime in.

1970 is the first year Ford put chrome shift levers and turn indicator wands in F series trucks...across the board. It's the first year for chrome front bumpers across the board too (in all models).

If you're referring to the lever, the automatic has a different part number than the manual shift.
They may work interchangeably, but, as I stated, the P/N is different.

To the best of my knowledge, Ford did NOT install chrome shift levers in F series trucks prior to 1970. I've owned 1965 through 1978 Ford trucks (course my 1999 Ford Ranger had a black shift lever, but I digress) and 1970 is the first year that I've seen the chrome shift levers.

70-72 trucks had the chrome shifter and turn signal lever.
I'm almost positive they started using a black knob in 73 on both levers, even though the levers themselves were chrome.
