Leaky cab

Post by scotts »

This category seemed to be the most logical place to ask a question about water in the cab sense it's getting my carpet all wet. Every time it rains I am getting a large huge puddle of water on my floor mat on the drivers side. It seems to be coming from under the dash. Asside of a possible windshield leak, where might I look to find a leaky seal or hole that needs to be plugged. Everything looks ok except the seal between the hood and firewall. It's coming in pretty serious.

Well, if it isnt leaking from the windshield, your next area to look would be behind the dash where the windshild wiper actuators go through the firewall into the cowl. See if you have water lines leaking behind those 2 spots. If you do, then the gaskets are shot (and they probably are if they are 40+ years old). The rainwater goes into the cowl, and if those gaskets are shot, then those are 2 common leak spots. You can get replacement gaskets from NPD, LMC, etc...

Check the windshield seal. The wiper pivot seals, and finally the cowl can rust thru.

Are you sure the leak isn't the drip rail (up top) and running into the dash?

Last but not least, climb in and look for the leak and tell us where it is 'near'...

:yt: And around the brake-booster, steering column gasket, anything that goes through the firewall-wire grommets etc., rubber plugs under the dash to the left and above the vent, remove and check behind the vent and the gasket, an awful lot of crud can accumulate, make sure cowl is clear and drains freely down to the fender's lower rear attaching points...
There's lots of places for water to get in.
Drastic measures may call for the firewall cover removal to inspect.

Great information. I will check out these places and see how they look. I know my windshield leaks. There is a gap at the top right on the windshield seal, but where I'm getting the most water is on the left side and it pours in on my feet. The windshield wiper seal sound like a culprit.
