factory-fit dual voice coil speaker doesn't fit

Post by pollock »

I have a CD player installed in my 71 using the volvo install kit, which worked great.

I just bought the dual voice coil 6x9 from LMC to install in the factory speaker location. Trouble is, it doesn't really fit with the CD player. I have it screwed in place (more or less), and when I slide the deck it it hits the back of the magnet before it goes all the way in.

Best I can tell, it would be even worse with a factory radio.

I don't have the factory speaker bracket any more, which I seem to remember was a heavy steel strap. I would try it if I had it, but from what I remember it would not help the interference I'm running into.

The way I have it installed, it is offset to the left a bit. The magnet also interferes with the housing that holds the ashtray. I can trim that if needed without impacting the ashtray function.

To make it fit I think I'm going to have to make some kind of adapter to shove the speaker as far forward as possible.

Has anyone else run into this?

Upon further review I don't think there's any way to make it fit in the factory speaker location. I was hoping I could build a bracket that would tilt the speaker, so that the magnet was angled forward and would miss the stereo. But I can't tilt it far enough for the magnet to clear without the metal frame of the speaker hitting the stereo.

I searched "speaker" on this forum and found one or two posts that hinted that this speaker does not fit. Wish I had done that before buying it. Apparently the factory speaker size is 5x7. I happen to have a Sony 5x7 speaker laying around and it would fit fine, but it doesn't support 2 channels.

Because my dash pad is pretty shot, I could cut a hole in the pad and cut out the metal grille area of the dash itself, then mount it on top of the pad. I'd have to come up with a grille, and I'm not crazy about how that would look. Plus, this was supposed to be an easy install and that would be a lot of work. Probably just going to return this thing to LMC.

So, moral of the story - Don't buy that speaker.

the original speaker magnet is 2 3/4 deep from top to bottom. it sits about 2 1/2 back from the bezel mounting hole on the speaker bracket. how does the lmc speaker bracket look is it the same as this one? does it have the square magnet base to it? i guess i accidently deleted the pictures of the measurements.

now before anyone contacts me about the speaker in this picture. i couldnt get it to work the last time i messed with it. if i can get it to work i will be keeping it for my use. so it is not for sale. the bracket i have several of them.

I would guess the LMC speaker is probably 3.5" tall - will verify that later and post it. It doesn't come with a bracket. It has 4 mounting holes around the face of the speaker at locations common to most aftermarket speakers. Definitely does not have the square magnet.

Good thing I read this post since i also bought the LMC speaker thinking it would be a direct replacement - wrong! See pics:

Would of been better off buying something like this and installing it in the original housing:

RMA time - calling LMC to return crappy speaker!

390Bump,

I don't know if those classic speakers are OEM type or if the "dual voice" feature is for stereo sound, but if you're just looking to replace the original AM radio speaker like I was, I just bought a univeral OEM one at a local car stereo shop for seven dollars...I had to cut the square cutout on the bracket a little bigger to accomodate the slightly bigger magnet on the new OEM speaker, but other than that, it was an easy install and sounds just as good as the original, tinny, talk radio and Frankie Sinatra blaring AM radio speaker that was in there...
This is the point...I'm....talking about everybody! I'm talking about form! I'm talking about content! I'm talking about interrelationships! I'm talking about God, the devil, hell, heaven!!!! Do you understand???? Finally!!!!

thanks Joe,

Bought the LMC speaker thinking it would be a perfectly designed replacement... Since it is not - I have some nice speakers I bought years ago for another project car that have been sitting around for years... I checked and think I can make one fit under the dash... Have both the original AM radio that works and the last thing I had installed (AM/FM cassette player). If I go Stereo I need to find a place for the second speaker. Some time back I had two external speakers bouncing around the passenger side of the cab. Looking for a more "finished" design! Maybe put the second speaker under the passenger seat by hte floor?

welll the lmc catalog description could be considered deseptive. "looks like the original" doesnt mean fits like the original. however the picture in the catalog is of the picture you posted with a round magnet. there is no way a large round peg will fit in a small square hole.

Hi fordman,
looking at the LMC catalog right now... says "it is designed to fit in the original speaker location..." and " it is the best solution when replacing your original speaker" And considering the catalog says 57-71 F100 is the application I didn't take out the old speaker first to look at it... Does this mean I should now question everything in the catalog? Maybe easier to do business elsewhere.

i looked and did see that now. they are lying. or passing on what the manufacturer said about it. as far as questioning thier other stuff. no alot of it is the real deal. i went in there once and wanted to look at something. and they brought it out to me in the original ford bag. unopened. but it didnt have what i needed included with the other parts so i didnt buy it. i think as in all vendors catalaogs they list thing that may not be totally correct for our trucks. but may work in other trucks or applications. the buyer just has to make sure before buying because they probably dont know specifics. they may only know what the manufacturer tells them about the product. you would think though that they should know better. this kind of goes back to the disscusion about autozone vs a napa store. its all in the employees training and experience as well as the information provided by the company selling the part. and where they got the information from. it may be a communist plot to mess up our trucks. ha ha.

Those pictures definitely tell the story. I didn't really expect it to fit in the stock bracket (don't have one anyway), but I did expect that it would physically fit in the right location.

It looks like a great product. Seems to be well made. And it may fit fine in other old cars, but not a bumpside.
