Question about aftermarket stereos in a '67

Post by ameldorf »

I have read through a few threads regarding aftermarket headunits. I know the Metra kit has worked, but am curious as to if anyone has put this kit in a dash with tabs like mine, pictured below. I assume this is the original dash, but could be wrong. I have seen at least two other styles of radio tabs in 67s from searching the forum.
I am torn as to if I want to do too much cutting. I may end up putting the stereo in the glovebox and letting the nonfunctional AM sit in its rightful place.

If you have the AM radio I'd leave it in the dash and hide the aftermarket one. They never look right in an old dash. My $.02 :D

If you have the radio bezel, this radio will fit your dash. This radio is in my '68, but it will fit into your '67 dash. This radio has 200 watts output through four speakers. It is a great sounding radio, but the remote sucks, i've had three remotes & they will not hold up. With this radio it makes no difference where your control knobs are located as they are divorced from the radio. It is a Restosound unit I bought from Crutchfield.

The 67 radio is thinner (top to bottom) than the 68-72 radios and the Retrosound radio will not fit in the 67 bezel without modifying the bezel, and that would be a sin on a 1 year only part which is that hard to find. I have the same radio and I checked for fit on my friend's 67 to see if it was an option for him, and it will not work. The radio face is too tall. Retrosound does not make a 67 version either.

As stated before, your best bet is what you already thought of and keep the stock AM radio in place and put your working deck out of sight somewhere.

Thanks Calfdemon: I was thinking about knob control placement. I originally placed my radio in the glove compartment, but the problem with the remotes made me move it. My truck came with a radio delete plate & I was going to leave it there. Thanks again. I hate to give out the wrong info, but it sometimes happens. :)

Not a problem! Figured you wouldn't mind and I know you were not trying to steer him wrong. :) I just happened to have 1st hand experience with that exact stereo and a 67 truck, so figured I would help out.
