Carpet - choosing the right one

Post by doughboy68 »

I am getting close to ordering carpet... The carpet website has a disclaimer for making sure the tranny hump is a samll or big hump. How do I tell the difference. Anyone have the heights of theirs so I can compare? Mine is about 4.5 inches roughly. Is the patch in the pic a hole for the shifter or just covering a hole?

A floor without a removable cover is a "standard" or "low hump". The removable cover adds a couple more inches to make it the "high hump" they refer to. Yours doesn't look it ever had the removable cover so it's a "low hump". The patch there looks like where somebody had cut out a hole for a floor shifter and then took it out and patched the hole. Ask me how I know... :D ?

don't be surprised when your new carpet comes up a little short against the kick panels. At least mine did. It likes about 1/2 inch on both sides. I laid mine in a couple weeks ago and had that problem.I just laid it in temporary so that it would rest in it's place until i get back to making it fit. I'm going to try to stretch the carpet from door to door when i get the chance. I have the truck covered for winter so it will be awhile before i mess with it.

If you order from Stock Interiors I've heard you can get it "untrimmed" and its a little bigger all around. Or so I've read. :hmm:

 You should see my tunnel. I put a floor shifter in mine, cheap Mr. Gasket one. Cut the hole in the wrong place the first time and had to recut it in the right place a second time. When i took the floor shift out I just stuck a piece of rubber floor mat under the existing full width rubber mat. When I started my rebuild I kicked myself for such a half a$$ job and had to weld patches over the holes. Putting in a removable hump so I just patched it flush to the edge of the cut out but it's got 2 patch plates to cover my sins. Fortunately it'll be under carpet so nobody knows but me. Until now, that is.

I ordered from stock interiors and ordered my carpet untrimmed. I cut 6" from each side and the back. I will always order it untrimmed in the future.
