Drill Doctor 750X bit sharpener - Review

Post by HIO Silver »

A few weeks ago I sprained my thumb due to a relatively dull bit on an electric drill biting into the frame while doing the spring hanger flip on my 2WD '70.

I bought the 750X off of Amazon and am very happy with the product. The 750x came with a blow-molded case, the sharpening unit, the large chuck, and instructional video. I had previewed it as well as user videos on YouTube. Go for the 750x because it will sharpen up to 3/4-inch bits. My selection consists of Harbor Freight bits, two flip boxes of bits from the 1980s IIRC, as well as a whole box of large bits, like 40 of them, from a Good Guys swap meet for $20. Have ya ever priced large bits? They can be as much as $15 or more for one bit so offering a flat price for the entire box was a super deal.

Before sharpening, I tested a 1/4-inch bit on what is left of my dock bumper and it only made a divot.... after sharpening, it drilled a through-hole with relative ease.

So, if you have a large selection of bits like I do, the 750X can save money, frustration, and reduce the likelihood of personal injury.

I've always wondered how well those bit sharpeners work. Glad to hear a personal testimonial. What's the cost?

I'm not knocking the drill doctor. I have been in the woodworking biz for over 40 years and having access to a belt sander at all times that is what i learn to sharpen my bits on. Been doing that for many years with no problem. I just have to get the pitch right just by sight and a steady hand. I would use them not only on wood but stainless steel and other metals. About a year ago i purchased a Drill doctor and after trying it out a few times i went back to my belt sander. I guess i was just used to the sander after all those years. and found the sander to be much faster. Still, the Drill doctor is a nice piece to any shop. Congrats on your new tool!!!

I haven't sharpened a bit in three years as a result. Hot knife through butter.
too many Fords, no where near 'nuff time.

or, money.

Years ago I was drilling a good bit of 3/16 titanium (6-4), drill doctor was on sale , grabbed one and makes touching up much easier.

I too used to sharpen them on my 2x72 Bader , but find my shakey hands favor the drill dr.

:yt: Two things that will get you injured fast: dull drill bits and dull knives. I have a Drill Doctor and love it! I think it pays for itself in replacement bits over time. The other "tool" I have is a Chef's Choice knife sharpener, it turns any [censored] knife into a Ginsu! Love it! Just sharpened 5 knives and used them this week making BLTs (heirloom tomatoes coming in at a rate of about 4-6 a week). Barely any pressure on the fruit and the knife is lasering through the flesh.

Why would this system censor the word k i t c h e n ? As in the place you prepare food? strange.
