460 Engine Swap - advice needed

Post by Garf »

I am planning to put a 460 / C6 into my 1970 F100 LWB truck. Truck had a 302 with a C4 tranny. Looking for details on the things I need to know to try and avoid "surprises". Here are a few questions....
1. I know I need engine mounts from dentside or buy aftermarket. Do either bolt into existing holes in cross-member?
2. Any clearance issue with power brake booster?
3. Any clearance issue with headers and inner fenders, steering box, or?
4. Cab tunnel cover. Mine is flat. Do I need a raised cover for the tranny?
5. What, if anything, will I need to do to the driveshaft? Shorten?
6. Is it true to get the tranny out you need to pull the engine?
7. Any detailed write-ups for this swap I could get a link for?

Answers to these questions and any other advice would be extremely appreciated!

Dentside motor mounts if you can, booster probably won't allow you to remove valve cover. That's why cantilever booster moved it up. Steering box needs to be saginaw, headers are tight there. Cut rivets out of crossmember between radius arms so you can drop trans. Bolt in high tunnel needed.

1. Trans Dapt 9720 mounts. Most of the holes were already there.
2. No power brakes.
3. Headman 89140. One small ding on the right side at the lower rail. Pipes above both cross members. Manual steering.
4. Flat hump is fine. No rib C6 fits with room to spare.
5. Local shop cut the driveshaft. The C6/1310 yoke came out of a 73 two door Lincoln. Summit has them for a hundred or so.
6. They can be removed separately or together
7. pics on request.
8. 460 F100: more fun than the law allows. 3820 at the scales.

Thanks for the info. I would love to see a few pics if that's not too much trouble.

I just put together this 4781-2 850. I'll put it on there this weekend and see how it runs.

Nice job on the crossover pipe/"H" pipe in the dual exhaust.
So...many folks don't realize how important it is!

Can you keep tires on it LOL?! :woohoo:

I have true duels on my 71 F100 long bed with a 460/c6 ps. pb auto, headers and 4v. I don't have a cross over pipe. Are they THAT important? AM I leaving that much power on the table?

I think the power difference is minimal. It does seem to smooth out the sound a little.

Design [b[THEORY[b/] of a crossover pipe does so much more than that...
It is suppose to equalize the pressures between all 8 cylinders, (or 6 if you had a V-6) across the cylinder banks from each side for more HP.
