Wait a minute everyone... you're dealing with a diesel.. not a gas engine. A diesel is supposed to run a bit hotter..it NEEDS to, as it's firing it's fuel/air mix by heat generated internally, not a spark. A diesel's happiest just before it spews coolant out. If he's running about 200 - 210, and pulls up to 220 or even 230, I'd be just happy as could be as long as it doesn't spew coolant out when it's doing it. The reason we can go higher on the temps in the cooling system is mostly because of the pressure in the system, not necessarily the coolant. The other thing he can do is get his foot out of it a bit... I run diesel engines pulling big loads all the time and that's just the way it goes sometimes.... you can't always keep your foot just mashed to the floor! Diesel's are a bit different than a gas engine in that to make more power, you have to retard the injection timing, so the burn time is longer to take care of the air/fuel mix, and (very very importantly) LOWER the compression ratio, and if you're throwing some of the chips and crap that they are promoting with all the new pickups, you run into temp problems if you don't take care of the internal stuff. The older pickup was most likely set up to run a bit cooler, but in the interest of better emissions, fuel economy and power, they've set them up to run a bit hotter. I'm not that familliar with the Chevys, but isn't the first one a 6.5 liter, and the new one a Duramax? There's a world of difference in the two engines, and the way they run!! (I just don't remember when the Duramax came out )
There's a good site www.dieselinjection.net that you can go read his horsepower articles about diesel engines and it's explained very clear and easy to understand.
All in all, I'm not sure this guy has an actual problem... I'd want to ride along and see what he's doing to make much of an opinion.

John, thanks for your input...I think you're right, his first one was the smaller deisel...not the duramax, which was what was so alarming to him...I asked him the same thing..."are you sure you have a problem?"...But if the guage is correct,it's running over 255",with the overheating point being 260"...He never had this problem with the same trailer and smaller deisel...If the dealer had done some of the things you and others have suggested here, they may have been able to salvage a happy customer out of the deal instead of just blowing him off...
This is the point...I'm....talking about everybody! I'm talking about form! I'm talking about content! I'm talking about interrelationships! I'm talking about God, the devil, hell, heaven!!!! Do you understand???? Finally!!!!

Joe, absolutely first thing I'd look at would be the gauge! I've seen them up to 20 degrees off, with alarming regularity!! Try a digital thermometer.
