PHNL... I've done that one a few times on the sim. Same runway too. The buildings off in the distance
look about the same on the sim..
What do those C-17's usually cruise at? Kinda surprised you would be much slower than any other jet..
With the 737's I usually run, I tend to cruise at mach .78-79 or so most of the time, assuming the
upper 30K flight levels.. I've got a 900 I've got rigged up now as a BBJ3. It's the biggest and
baddest of my artificial 737 fleet. Has all the extras, including the [censored] sinks. :lol:
I made a video using it going into Playa de Oro a few months back. "Mexico on the Pacific coast. Visual landing..
I actually flew it from the left seat, but decided to make the video from the right seat, being as I don't show
that side too often. It's fully operational from that side. Kind of shows the FO's perspective and terror when landing
at the mercy of me running things from the left seat.. :evil: :lol:

Normal at .72, and I've seen .77, but that was for a medivac and our fuel burn was crazy at something like 20k per hour. Big block motors, big fat body, not real efficient on the high end.

I guess they would burn the fuel if you were humping it with a big load.
Some of the jets will have an "economy" speed usually at high altitude.
The Learjets were one I can recall that did.. You could run mach .77-78 or so,
but economy cruise was mach .74, and usually well above FL400.

With the 737NG's, I usually go with the recommended FMC speed suggested.
Which is usually mach .78-79 range in the upper 30k range.
But will vary a bit on the cost index that you punch in. The higher the cost index,
the higher the speeds overall, including the IAS speeds during climb and descent.
Actually, the IAS speeds probably change more than the cruise mach speed from what
I see using the various numbers. When I'm playing Southwest I'm using running
a CI of about 36 or so.. But with my private planes, I might bump up a tad. Say 40-45.
With a CI of 36 in a 737-700, you will usually climb out a bit above 290 knots.
With a CI of 45, you might be a tad over 300 knots. But that will depend on the model,
with the 800-900's generally running a bit faster than say a 600-700 with a certain cost index.

327 - So just got two little trucks worth of gas, didn't need a whole lot at all. When I went into the terminal to sign for the fuel card, I saw a sign that had a full rewards program list. 300 gallons for a key ring, 500 for a hat, ect. I asked what does 5700 gallons get me? Shirts for the whole crew apparently.

342 – Reset to fly in 24 hours when the paperwork is square. In the middle of a snow storm, so delayed again to the place is plowed. Had to bust out the cold weather book to put diesel fired heaters in the oil servicing doors to get them to crank.

Had a Kalitta cargo 727 fly over me a couple of nights or so ago. It was fairly late, and I assumed it was a
straggling Southwest jet from the west coast or sumtin.. But looked on Flightaware and it was a Kalitta cargo
727. They also had a biz jet that was running along with it. Both went on to the Denver area later that night.
I flew on a 727 once back in Nov 1969. It was a baby doo-doo green Braniff, and flew from Kansas City downtown
to the brand new Houston Intercontinental. We stopped in OKC on the way as I recall. That was back when
Braniff painted all their planes the different colors.. Green, orange, yellow, brown, etc..

Made another video the other day. Going into Toncontin "MHTG" with the 900. But is only a quick outside view of
the appx 120 degree turn to final and landing.. Was doing RNAV 02 from the south. Plopped it down right on the
numbers. :)

They were fairly comfortable. I remember when the pilot landed at KIAH, he really greased it.
So smooth you couldn't hardly tell that the wheels hit the pavement. Smoother than most 737
landings I've been on. With the newer 737's, they use gear strut and wheel spin sensors for
spoiler deploy and autobrakes if used, so it's generally considered bad practice to land a 737
too smooth. Back in the day, the 727's ran pretty fast too.. usually mach .80 or faster. I think
up to about .86 or so, but like the planes you fly, they would really start sucking the fuel at the
higher speeds, so mach .80-.82 was more common for economy.

049 – Nairobi Kenya, Feb 2014. For the first time on this African safari trip, I had to do a little bit of work. The airport authority wouldn't let us use thrust reversers to back away from the terminal where our parking spot was, and insisted we get a pushback. Not a thing to do with noise, but to snag that $5k pushback fee. Next, the rattiest Uke rolls out without a towbar. Most commercial airports have a 767 or DC-10 bar that works with our nose gear no problems, so I thought for $5k, this was a sham.
“Where is your towbar.”
“Sir it is broken!”
“So can we back out ourselves?”
“Sir, you must have a towbar!”
Not looking to get in an argument, and because we actually did bring a towbar on this mission, let’s just play along. I’ve also found most commercial airports don't like you hanging out on the taxiway while we go through our convoluted engine start checklists compared to civilian world with fast as possible to make money engine start procedures. The A code agreed, and we decided to go with the engine runnin' pushback. I stood ground through the start sequence because it’ll take a minute for the loads to roll the towbar around some rolling stock and down the ramp.
“Is this lugging and chugging crate even going to have the ummph to move us?”
“Sir it will go!”
“Let’s roll!”
To his credit, the driver slowly got us most of the way out of parking, and %100 blocking the taxiway. I brought the show to a stop, had the pilot set brakes, and motion the driver to back up to unload the weight of the jet on the towbar. His frantic pulling on the shifter wasn’t working, so the driver shut down the motor. Finally went to neutral, but then it won't crank. “So there I was,” with an engine running C-17, blocking 2 or 3 other jets now, pinned tight to a dead Uke, with the pilots askin',
“Chief, what’s goin' on down there? We gotta go!"
Yelled at the guy to get on the radio for another tractor so we could pull it back enough to yank the pin, and we’ll back ourselves away from this mess. Minutes later, the littlest 3 cylinder diesel New Holland baggage cart tug makes it's way over. I knew she had no chance of budging a 50 ton Uke, but they tried anyway.
“Screw this.”
Got my toolbox from the jet, and with some resentment they let me pull the two batteries from the New Holland and wire them in series for the 24v Uke. Fired that joker up, backed him a hair, pulled the pin, undid the bar for the loadmasters to winch up the ramp. Came back to the front to reconnect the nose wheel steering, pull the pins, and let’s wrap this checklist up. By that time, I noticed the Uke had driven away before giving the batteries back to the New Holland. Just don’t stall that unit. Ooops, looks like they did. Oh well, had just enough room to steer to the left around 'em. Onward to the next stop!
