An alternative to Metal Ready

Post by spartman »

Found out that the main ingredient in Metal Ready is Phosporic Acid.

If all you want to do is remove the rust you can either buy it from a school chemical supplier, ebay, or get a concrete cleaner.

If you have a home depot near by simply pickup the Pre-Cast Concrete Cleaner product made by Miracle Sealants.

The stuff from Home depot is acutally a little stronger than the Metal Ready.

Just thought I would throw this out and see what came back.

por-15 is the same as industrial steel sealer, witch you can by at your local paint store it is also used on bridges to seal ! It is made the same catalyst and composites as por -15. After the bridge is prepped and painted the density is taken to see if there is coated to spec this is called hang time most steel workers know about this stuff !O and is half the cost at the local paint store!

Cool. So this stuff will actually eat off the rust? I suppose you have to keep an eye on it or do it in several stages. If I recall phosphoric acid will also eat through the metal if left on too long. Does this sound right? Has anyone tried it? Does it work well?

It will like all acids eat the metal completely.

The big thing with the phosporic does it a lot slower and safer than the hydrocloric or sulphuric acid.

I bought a bottle of stuff called rust eater at my local TSC and am trying it on an old rusty carb from a tractor.

The carb is all cast iron and was badly rusted inside and it seems to be working quite well.

Anyone done a price comparison on the steel sealer? Is it UV resistant? Colors?

Are you supposed to wash it off before you apply the Por-15? :?
I thought after the Marine clean stage the metal wasn't suposed to be touched?

You need to wash off the marine clean when you are done.

Otherwise it will keep "cleaning" the metal.

Yeah, I understand that the Marine clean needs to be washed off, but I geuess I should have clarified my question.
Does the Metal Ready need to be washed off, too? I can't find anything on the label about that. Or does the first application of Por-15 neutralize the Metal Ready?

The metal ready does need to be washed off also.
Sorry bout that had a brain fart.

If left on the acid in the Metal ready will possibly eat all of the metal.

Also with metal ready it will leave a powdery residue that the POR cannot bond to.
