Western mirrors

Post by 67f100 »

I bought a pair of western mirrors at the Puyallup earlybird swap meet last year. Cheap. The glass is broken. Can these be fixed at the local car glass place or was this a bad purchase? At the price I paid I figured the stanchions were worth it.

Oh yeah....any glass shop can fix those in a heartbeat. The frame comes apart easily and then the glass replaced.

I have those on my '68 and I feel I must warn you of something: They will interfere with your vision to the side.
If you do much driving in town be very careful when coming up to a corner because a vehicle aproaching from the side can 'hide' behind those mirrors and you might not see him until it's too late.
Be careful.

Thanks guys, they do obstruct vision a bit but I had 'em on my first real truck-69' F250-and we got along fine. I just like the look of 'em.

I picked up some misc west caost mirror parts at the last swap. Three mirrors, backings & frames, stainless brackets and one arm.

I plan on getting them powder coated white (backings and maybe the frames). Anyone have any pics of unmodified mirrors so I can see which parts where white and which parts stayed stainless?

My plans for these when I am done is to put them up for auction here for the forum.

Hey Greg, I'm in the process of restoring a pair of these mirrors right now and they are all stainless. I think the stainless mirrors were on Ranger optioned trucks and the cream painted ones were on Customs and lesser optioned trucks. I don't know, I'm just assuming.and you know what they say about that! rick

Greg,
Are they all stainless right now? If so... I'd be interested in them the way they are!

I don't think I've ever seen a mirror setup that was a combination of stainless and paint. Every mirror assembly I've ever seen was either stainless OR painted. The painted ones had paint on all parts, except for the attaching hardware, of course.

I just went through my picture collection which includes (as of right now)...:

1967 - 444 pictures
1968 - 328 pictures
1969 - 382 pictures
1970 - 221 pictures
1971 - 310 pictures
1972 - 297 pictures

...and I couldn't see a single mirror was was a combination of stainless and paint. :o ...except for grain trucks, like the F600. On a couple of those trucks the brackets were painted steel and the mirror frames/backing was stainless.

The ones I have they have stainless brackets and the rod that holds the mirror (only one rod) are styainless. The backing plates and the trim that fits around the mirrors are painted. One is rusty so I know it is not stainless.

I thought it was cool when I took the glass mirrors out and on the other side it is also a mirror. The side that was facing out is turning black and the side that was inside is still like new.

Hi, I have the same mirrors, the "westerns" have a U-post and a brace post, there's also some called "west coast" that were just a mirror-integral U-shape, sometimes I'm tempted to switch to those......my 67 camper special came with the all steel westerns, and FOR SURE, you have to LOOK LOOK LOOK .........look, at every intersection before proceeding (it helps to be tall when driving these trucks).......I just replaced all the acorn nuts on mine and it cost 14 bucks just for the hardware! :hmm: I think I could get a whole new set of mirrors for 60!
but, one thing's for sure, those westerns look BITCHIN

Where did you find the acorn nuts? I am having trouble finding them for my mirrors.

I just finished re-doing mine last year for my truck but I did it all in stainless steel .The mirror backing and support are stainless and so is the arms for the mirrors .I got new glass from standard auto glass in Winnipeg Manitoba and the mirror glass is still in stock .The accorn nuts ,washers, screws, and lock washes cost me $55.00 at A-Adam supply in Winnipeg as well.
You could find these nuts at a "Jobber" place like A-adam that just deals with nuts, bolts, washers, etc.I felt re-doing these mirrors was worth while because they were original Ford mirrors for that year of truck.
