need wiring harness or advice on how to get the bare minimum

Post by 72fordcustom »

My entire dash is ripped apart. My heater is gone along with the radio, and instrument. All this to find a short that was causing a draw on my batt. I now have a big mess of wires behind where the instrument panal used to be. this is strictly a work truck and I just need to get the ignition and lights figured out. The wiring diagram on this site is good but it doesnt give me a lot of help because it has been rewired by some idiot before me. I can post pic of what i got going on but I would really like a another way of starting my truck besides jumpin the syliniod. what wires do I need and what wires can go any that can go I want out. Its a 72' f100 custom 2x with a 302ci any help you guys can give would be appreciated.

The wiring in these trucks is actually pretty simple. However, if the underdash harness is as butchered as you say, maybe you should consider just replacing it with a good used harness, rather than trying to fix the one you have? It would be simply a matter of unplugging the old one and plugging the new one in, and would allow you to have everything working.

So if my truck starts when I jump the syliniod its likely time to replace what? the syliniod? or the toggle? and what have you gone through4 of in 15 years? thanks its a great idea and one that I will likely use

its not the solinoid thats bad. it is probably the wiring. i wouldn't go cutting any wires from it. i have a 67 that it looked like someone had totally rewired with different colored wires. it didn't match the schematics in colors anyway plus there was no turn signals hooked up and other wierd things had been done. i had to finally pull it from the truck and replace it with another one i had that was a untouched factory harness.

And......Although it's too late now. 9 times out of ten, a drain on the battery is either from a bad solenoid, or voltage regulator.

except my harness when i pulled it out looked like it had been put in an oven, all melted together, none of my gauges worked my sending unti wasnt working my truck would just die at random times and then there was the draw, so you may be right but i still needed to pull the harness
