Horn doesn't work

Finally got serious about fixing the little things wrong with my '71. Last night I noticed the horn doesn't work...probably hasn't worked in years, I've only been putting 150-200 miles on it per year the last 15 years or so, and probably haven't tried the horn. Anyway, I thought the problem may be the horn relay so I picked one up today and installed it tonight. Horn still doesn't work when I press the steering wheel pad, but if I run a wire from the horn directly to the battery the horn sounds. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would also like to say how helpful this site and its members have been. Every question I've posed on this site has received very helpful reponses. You guys are great!

If it's the old style horn/cap, I'd first check the little
button inside the steering wheel. The cap comes off
easy. It has tabs, and be careful not to break them...
Just twist the cap to take off and on. The tabs will clear
the slots. There is a little tiny brass/copper button inside
that sticks out to touch the cap. Make sure it's not corroded.
Take some sandpaper/ emery board, etc, and clean the tab
surface down to clean metal, if it's crudded up. Make
sure the thin wire is not broke. MK

Thanks, but the horn is the pad style that the 71s and 72s have...no central horn cap.

Your padded horn is held on with 2 screws from the backside of the steering wheel. It does not use the top contact like the earlier ones. You should be able to take out the padded horn button and jump across the wires in there to see if the hoen honks.

yea, not totally sure about the padded version...I have that on my
74, but not totally sure how it makes contact.
The padded horns use contact "strips" of sorts, that run across
the wheel front. They are plastic, but have metal strips inside to
contact either the other strip, or ground...Not totally sure....Haven't
had to mess with it that much...MK
