Ignition switch question

Post by dcbullet »

Hi:

I have problems with my ignition switch in that I have to jiggle the key to get some of the interior electronics to work (e.g. radio, gauges, etc.).

So I'm planning to replace the switch. Here's my question. For any of you who've had this problem before, did you need to replace the lock cylinder as well? I'm wondering if I stick my old lock cylinder in a new switch if the problem will remain.

Thanks in advance.

you can re-use your lock cylinder in a new switch.
you'll need to have the key in the cylinder, use a sturdy straightened out paper clip to insert into the hole on the keyed face, turn key, and the key mechanism comes out.

i doubt the problem will persist.

No, you should not have the same problem using your old cylinder and a new switch.

Disconnect the battery before pulling the cylinder.

turn key to accessory, insert paper clip. It will then turn another notch to left and let go. If I remember right.

I second this! That's how I blew my fusible link.

Ok, all fixed. You guys were correct and it works fine now with the old lock cylindar.

What a relief. You can imagine how fun it was driving around and then the gauges, blinkers, radio, and fan stop working. Then I'd reach down to jiggle the key to get them working again and the engine would turn off.

The switch in these old trucks is a snap to replace.
Try doing the one in a 91 Taurus. PIA.
