How does a person re-attach their door glass to the metal channels at the bottom?
I bought something from Dennis Carpenter called something like "Door Glass Tape". Is this even what I need? Is it used just to put enough tension between the glass and the channel so that they stay attached.
i have never took my windows off of those rails on the bottom of the glass. i wouldnt do it unless the metal rails are loose on the glass. but if you have done it already that tape is suppose to go inbetween the metal and the glass to hold the glass in and cushion it from the metal.
In the old days you had to squirt some auto trans fluid on the rubber .
It would make the material swell and hold the glass better.
I don't know if your stuff works like that or not.
In my dads shop we always used 3m weather strip glue a little on the edge of the glass and in the groove of the track also along with the tape you have. Install and trim with a razor blade. Just work it on a little at a time from end to end using a hammer like a dead blow or rubber hammer. Try not to hammer on the part where the roller runs it will collaspe and make it roll up and down hard.
For what it's worth...
A single layer of that tape did absolutely nothing to hold the glass.
Part of the issue is that I already had the glass in the doors. I didn't really feel like getting the division bar loose again to take them out.
I doubled it up and pressed it on the glass as best I could. I wouldn't say the glass is "all the way" down in the channel. But - for now anyway - it's holding well enough that the windows crank up and down OK.
You might not have the right thickness they did make several thickness's. I do remember having to use 2 layers on some windows but as always we did use the weather strip glue black is my prefered color.
