So a new local Fordification member came by today... Ralphatlarge87 dropped by in his 71 Highboy crew cab. That thing is badass!! Needs some paint and a few things here and there, but that thing is awesome!!! It has a mean 460 in it and is in the air on 35's.

Anyway, he really helped me out with my garage storage situation!! He ended up needing a bunch of stuff that I had lying around as extras.. I was able to unload 2 AC compressors along with 460 mounts and pulleys, an AC condensor and dryer, some step bars for a Ford, my west coast mirrors that I decided not to run, my cab roof lights that I decided not to run, an extra new heater hose valve, an extra 70-72 hood trim piece, some restored 67 F250 emblems, an extra 71-72 grille and headlight bezels (I had 4 grilles), an extra rear view mirror, an extra set of black and yellow commercial plates, and a few other odds and ends I had that I did not need. He left here like a kid on Christmas morning and I have a bunch more shelf space now!! Of course, he insists on giving me stuff now but I dont need anything. Lucky for us, he has a few things that CNM67 needs for his truck that we have been looking for and have had a hard time finding. So tomorrow I will go and pick a C6 transmission and a 67-69 hood in good shape. Anyway, another great Fordification trade off took place and everyone got stuff they need. I am stoked to have that stuff out of my garage and see it go to someone that will put it to use! And on a crew cab at that! Brings a smile to my face!! :D

One of the things that his truck has that I do not have, and want, are the 2 small curved carpet hold downs (like the door sills) that go around the front curve of the rear door steps on crew cabs. I will need to take pictures of them as they are a crew cab piece only and I am sure I am going to have a hell of a time finding them. But I really want them as they will help me with my carpet situation at the steps where my front and back carpet overlap.

Anyway, another great Fordification meet and a good guy! We both can help each other out with different aspects of our truck builds.

He sent me a picture of his truck after he left with the mirrors and cab lights mocked up on it. They needed to be on that truck. He had the small sport mirrors and said he could not see a thing through them, which I know because I had them on my standard cab long bed and they were almost worthless on it. So a crew cab cannot have those little mirrors. Anyway, here is his truck:

Image

In the meantime, I had every intention of getting stuff done on my truck today, but as of 5pm, I have not accomplished anything other than uncovering it and getting my wheels and tires from storage. It is STILL 107 outside and just too damn hot to do anything. So hopefully it will cool a little soon and I can get at least a little something done before I am out of light... In the meantime, here is the view while it was 98 in the shade INSIDE my garage... :x

Well, last night I extended the rear wiring harness from my old 72 standard cab by 3 feet with some of the good wiring from my 69 harness as my 69 was chopped and spliced by the PO for all sorts of reasons. Anyway, at 6pm today when my driveway finally had some shade, I crawled under the truck and ran the harness from the engine compartment to the rear and attached it to the frame along the way. Hooked everything up in the rear and checked all of my new LED lights. Everything works great.

And for those that are doing the LED switch out, it is confirmed, the flashers you need to get must have the reverse polarity unit with it (the $12 flashers at Summit). They do not work without the reverse polarity unit attached. So there you go. Anyway, I took a couple of pictures in the dark of everything lit up in the rear. My whole truck is now LED except the 2 little bulbs in the cigarette lighters, and my license plate lamp (only because it is an enclosed unit that cant be switched).

So here is a picture of just the lights on in the rear. Side bed markers and parking lights work great:
Image

Here it is with the left blinker on. So you can see the brightness difference with the blinkers or brakes on:
Image

And here is my green LED cab light behind one of Ranchero50's bezels and plexiglass units. Super bright and lights the whole cab up green. If I want white light, I have driver and passenger map lights in my rear view mirror that I can turn on for light in the front of the cab. But the green lights the whole cab up well for the purpose of getting in and out.
Image

Tomorrow I plan on getting the front grille and valances on the truck, front bumper, and front lights. I still have regular headlights but am going to look and changing them out to Halogen. Anything in particular that I need to do when doing this? I am already running a headlight relay harness so my lights draw their power straight from the battery and not through the headlight switch, but not sure what else I need to do. I have not researched it yet, but will look into it here soon...

You shouldn't have any issues with the Halogens. just make sure the contacts in the plugs are clean and grip the terminals good.

Well, after reading a little, the only thing I saw that might be an issue is that the plugs on my headlight relay harness are plastic. The halogen bulbs put off quite a bit more heat. So I bought 2 ceramic headlight plugs for $5 total and I will replace my plastic plugs with the ceramic plugs. This way, I have the peace of mind that I will have no issues.

Found some awesome halogens as well and just ordered them from Amazon... Love the FoMoCo script in the center of the glass! http://www.amazon.com/Scott-Drake-C0DZ- ... +headlight

Why not LED headlights?

Longer lifespan, higher output.
Yes they cost more than halogens but you don't replace them nearly as often so long term you'll come out ahead

I dunno... I just have no experience with LED headlights and had never looked into them. I already bought the Halogen lights for now, but when those bulbs go out, I can probably just replace them with an LED bulb kit like this, right?? http://www.ebay.com/itm/2014-New-72w-64 ... 4897.l5660 or this https://www.google.com/shopping/product ... JUBEPMCMAI

So that is something I can consider later I suppose, and still keep the FoMoCo headlight units.

Thanks for the compliment!! At least you can heat your garage up to a workable temperature. There is no way to cool mine down! And unfortunately, even if I could, my truck does not fit in the garage. Sitting out in 107 degree heat makes that pig almost impossible to touch, let alone work on it. I guess the extreme temp in either direction is a PITA. Wish every day could be in the 70's...

Re: Calf's 69 Crew build, and CNM67's 67 shorty build

Post by Calfdemon »

So today was another unbearable day of 105 degree heat. I was out in the heat all day but did not get as much done as I wanted to as I kept having to take breaks.

Anyway, I picked up the C6 transmission and 67 hood for CNM67's truck and got the hood on. It has a few small dents, but is overall in way better condition than the 70-72 hood he had on his truck. And this being a 67 hood is exactly what he wanted anyway. The transmission is out of a car and for a 460, but we have a 4x4 390 C6 in the garage as well. So between the 2 tranny, we will get a good workable transmission for his truck. Just going to have to find a drive shaft now.

Here is the tranny and the "new" hood on his truck:

Once I was done picking up stuff for Caleb and putting his hood on, I got out the 72 grille that I had Chicof100 polish up for me and proceeded to salvage small parts from my other 2 grilles (spacers, headlight buckets, adjustment screws, etc..) that this polished grille did not have. I then got my LMC billet inserts down and installed them. Got my upper and lower valances installed along with my hood latch and front marker lights. Got the grille all installed and now just waiting on my ceramic plugs and headlights to come in before I install the freshly painted buckets and finish up the headlight areas of the grille. I am also using the clear plastic blinkers instead of the amber ones. But I have amber LED lights behind them and when those lights come on, the entire blinker/parking light is amber. Looks great. I also got out my hood trim and installed that piece above the grille as well.

Anyway, here are some pictures of the grille installed. It was so hot, that I was sweating all over it, so it is no where near as shiny as it was when Robert handed it over to me, but a simple wipe down will rectify that problem. I was just too lazy to wipe it down before I snapped some pictures.

Image

Getting that grille put together took quite a bit longer than I had planned. So I did not get to the bumper today or get any of the other small things done that I wanted to tackle. Oh well.... I am happy with the grille. Because I already owned the LMC billet inserts and the fact that they were not cheap, is the only reason I am not running a 69 grille on this truck. I actually love the billet look so that had to be the way to go on this truck since I already had it all.

Rich, love following your build it is giving me lots of great ideas for my 69 crew cab. If you ever run across passenger side doors front and back I am in the market for them. Not sure you know the answer or not but if I found some dent side doors could I just skin them with the bump side sheet metal replacements they make?

Thanks,
Jarrod

I honestly do not know if the measurements are going to be the same or not. The front door you can find just about anywhere off of any bump. The rear door is another story. You may want to try the classified adds on Old Ford Crew Cabs and see what is there. Doors pop up there from time to time. I have never been approved for an account there as I think the owner is MIA and the website just floats along, but people still place adds and there are usually phone numbers or emails to get ahold of them. Here is a link: http://www.oldfordcrewcabs.com/market/

Thanks for following my thread and the comments, and good luck on your hunt for that door!

The headlamps you purchased are OE replacement sealed beams. To change to LED, you'll have to purchase either correctly designed full replacement LED lamps, or a H4 conversion style 7" round headlamp and LED replacement H4 bulbs, which is not the best beam pattern. The good LED lamps are not cheap at all and most don't look good to me on an old truck.

Ah okay... I just saw that the headlights I bought were Halogen, so I assumed that they took the H4 bulbs. I was unaware that they had sealed versions as well. No biggie. I am good with these. Thanks for the info!

What I was suggesting was something like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/7-Round-H6024-G ... e2&vxp=mtr

Looks like an old sealed beam and uses H4 bulb.
Those may not have all the features of current truck headlights but would be brighter and from some of the video reviews of similar lights I've seen on youtube they're a definite improvement in pattern over original or sealed beam halogens.

Maybe if enough people ask Scott Drake would make a 7" round H4 housing with the FoMoCo script, though personally I'm not that fussy.
