press made out of a bolt and nut

Post by bike5087 »

So... a buddy lent me a homemade press for pressing a headset into a bicycle frame, then I proceeded to use it to press out spring bushings on my f250. Needless to say I messed it up. The tool was actually extremely strong and held up well until I accidently bottomed it out onto itself using an electric impact wrench. I also tried some allthread from the hardware store, but it was super wimpy. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on what sort of materials (super strong) I could replicate this homemade press with.

I have used grade 8 bolts, washers and nuts with no problems many times.

I'm not exactly sure what the 250's bushings look like, but when I worked on my Volvos, this was a popular tool we all made to remove our trailing arm bushing:
Bushing Tool
Be sure to apply some grease to the threads; your impact wrench rap-rap-raping away at it should drive them pesky bushings out.

You can get grade 8 all thread at a bolt shop the fine thread pitch is strongest. If what you are pressing is real tight buy the thick/long nuts more thread surface is better.

Grade 8 all thread is what I think I'll try to find. I live in a small isolated town so I may have to look around on the interwebs or travel to the big town to get ahold of some. Thanks for the advice - I wasn't even aware that you could get grade 8 all thread. Nice swedish car reference from Bummer72 - one of my other cars is an old SAAB.

Hopefully yours won't be as bad as mine, I finally took my springs to the local machine shop, they tried pressing them out after building a cone to do so like they do for the big trucks, but wound up using a torch to cut the outer sleeve of the bushing out to get them out. They then pressed them in using the cone tool they built. I've never had a set give me so much trouble, but what a difference it made in the truck.
