np435 married 205 in 1968 f250

Post by sodbreaker »

Hi everyone i have known about this site for a few years now just never signed up to write questions. I've always been able to find the answers to my questions in other posts. i have a 1968 f250 4x4 with the original 360 and np435 and divorced dana24 tcase. i already upgraded to a hp 44 front axle out of a 79' f250. the 360 is getting tierd and 435 has some issues also and never really cared for the divorced tcase. so i found another 79 f250 with a 435 and married 205. I am wanting to put that tranny and tcase set up in my 68'. I know it will fit but what i am wondering is will my factory 68 tcase cross member work with the 79 set up? Or do i need to use the 79 cross member also? just wondered if any one has done this swap and if there is anything else i should know? thanks

Yes i realize the tcase mounts differently i have the frame bracket for the tcase of the 79 i also have the 79 tranny cross member. I'm mostly curious if the factory 68 tranny crossmember will work were it is from the factory or if its strong enough. as the 68 tranny crossmember just hookd in the middle of the frame were as the 79 bolts to the top and bottom frame rail. I'm also alittle curious if the tcase cross member on the 68 will need to be cut to clear the rear drive shaft? i see no reason it should hurt to trim it down just curious if any one knew if would have to

I just finished putting a divorced 203/205 in my '68 so I have spent a lot of time under mine and I "think" the old T case cross member will not be in the way,if I could leave it in place I would. I would use the '79 trans cross member is the 79 frame the same width or is that when they became wider :hmm: I would not want that much weight/torque on the '68 :2cents:

I never really thought about it that way but yes i agree it dose seam like a much better idea to use the 79 tranny cossmember. the frames did get wider in 78 but they are the same width at the back of the cab
mounts then they flair out so that won't matter. the biggest problem I'm seeing is that the 79 frames are six inches tall and the. 68 frame is seven inches tall. will have to just put the tranny in there and see what kind of modification ill have to do to the 79 cross member to make it work.

That inch may come in handy when aligning the motor,trans/T case to the correct angle :2cents:

I'm in the middle of a similar swap in a '69 F-250. 429-435-married 205. It will not fit using the stock trans cross member. The trans was pushed up against the cab floor to the point that the cab wouldn't sit on it's mounts when I put it back on. I got a '79 or later cross member and it looks like it is going to work well. Drilling the holes looks like a pain. I'm going to cheat and take the cab back off. If I get a chance to take pictures I post them for you. As far as I can tell the t-case cross member won't be an issue.
