C4 or a C6?

Post by truckjunky87 »

What automatic would most likely be behind a 352 FE in a '67 F100?

I agree FMX or C6 (not a C4)

They are not the same. C6 is a heavy duty tranny. I have heard that FMX's are getting hard to find for parts nowadays.

seems like alot of 68 and back 352's had FMX's but it could be either best way to tell is crawl down there and look at the transmission pan if it a L shape then its a c6 if it more square then it a FMX i seriously doubt it's a C4...hope that helps.....

According tho the oil pan it is a C6 but in everything I have read on the FMX came with a V8 in '67. But judging by a partially removed cross member the C6 was added later. The problem now is the thing leaks but I think it is just the pan gasket.

Just be sure you do noy overtighten the pan bolts on that C6. The original pans were made from thin sheet metal and overetightening the bolts will distort the flange, making it nearly impossible to get a good seal.
You can get a pan made of thicker steel here:

My 67 F100 original has a 352 and C4 from the factory. The rating plate crosses over to a C4 in the 67 ford truck service manual also.
I'll be upgarding to a 390 and C6 soon.

Ford never made a C4 to mate to the FE series engines, it's gotta be a MX (heavy duty version of the FMX) tranny, the code on the rating plate only means an automatic, does not specify which one.

I stand corrected... After crawling under there it is not a C4 on my 352. The shop manual codes it as "automatic C4" but that's probably because there is no code for a MX-HD which is what I have.
