My Brother Austin.
If you have performed all the necessary PM on it, then 85k is nothing on a 4.0 or 4.6 powerplant. Expect to double or triple, maybe quadruple the mileage that you got on it now.

Honest engine!

72highboy,

Thanks for the heads up on the wheel placement. Had not thought of that.

mrung0wa,

I bought it brand new in Nov of 01, let it run on factory oil for 2500 miles then went to mobil full sythetic. It has never seen anything else. It is the 4.0, but I wish I would have gone w/ the 4.6. Not for the motor itself, but because of the trans. The 4.0 has the crazy 5 speed automatic, that doesn't come w/ a dipstick, so you have to take it to ford to change the trans fluid. I hate that. Usually, if I can't do something, I buy a book or video until I can.

Yeah, I talked to my Brother and he wonders what the engineers at FORD were smoking when they designed that tranny! This is how you fill the transmission. After you've changed R & R (w/filter change) there's a plug on the bottom of the tranny that's attached to a long tube. What you do is fill it up (w/MOBIL 1) until the fluid starts to come out of the same tube (yeah it sure sounds like something GM would come up with to me.), but make sure all the overflow from the tranny. Why you might be asking? Well when that plug installed the overflow comes out of this port into the bell housing creating a real F'n mess!
No there FORD hasn't changed it either! Makes me kinda glad that I sold my 02 Explorer 4.0 to my Brother (he's a Senior Master Tech at FORD), so he's got to deal with it now.
Look at it this way that's really the only idiosyncracy with that Explorer.

I saw one of those last Friday, a littler older than that one though. I pointed it out to the wife, saying what the heck is that, looks like Fords version of the Suburban and it's an F-series....
