Electrical short

Post by BigAl47 »

Need help
Having a problem with the wiring on my ignition switch. The pink wire gets hot and melts. This is my second main harness. I just got the truck
. It hasn’t ran for over two years. I replaced all electrical components (battery, alt, coil, starter etc). I see that the pink wire goes to the coil and also the starter relay. Where is my problem?... hopefully someone can help

It sounds as though there is a high amperage draw, possibly the ignition coil itself.

Red and blue should be the coil. One lead goes to the coil and the other to the little batt terminal on the starter. That way it's fed full voltage when the starter is cranking over. Sounds like you starter relay is wired incorrectly.

Should have said my truck is a 1972 f 250 sport custom.
Thanks for the help
The wiring diagram I saw says a pink wire from ignition switch splits an a brown to coil an brown to starter relay. Am I looking at the wrong diagram.

Sorry it’s a brown to starter relay and a red green to coil.

You are in the correct circuit. Where is your brown wire connected to on the starter solenoid? I made a mistake in my original post, it should be on the "I" post for "ignition". Otherwise by connecting it to the "batt" terminal anything powered by the "on" key position will always be powered through the pink wire which will melt it.
