Windshield washer nozzle assembly

Post by timachone »

Hey guys,

could anyone provide some pictures of the windshield washer nozzle assembly in detail?

I only have some fragments of the two on the firewall but how do the operate? What parts I have to buy?

My complete windshield washer assembly is missing, I only have some tube fragments hanging around... :(

Thanks,

Tim

Depending on the year you'll have the tank with an external pump or the tank and pump as an assembly. My '70-71 setup uses the newer tank and pump assy and a short pigtail harness that connects the old wiring connection to the newer pump which was used up through the '90's F series. The hose from the pump goes to a T fitting on the firewall that feeds both nozzles (which are soldered copper assemblies).

Ok,

from my research I would have had this windshield washer reservoir bottle

Would this be the right pump assembly for this?

That's an early setup and I don't have much experience with them. looks like you put the rubber grommet in the tank and then push the pump through it.

I think that too...

Perhaps somebody out here has to confirm this 8)

I'm pretty sure that's how it works. You unscrew the strainer assembly, put the grommet through the plastic tank and screw the strainer back on from the inside. I can understand why Ford changed the design because that's a lot of labor time to assemble the tank / pump.

On the newer ones the pump pushes in from the side and an O ring seals it. A locking ring with one way tabs holds the pump in the tank. The tank has the pump housing formed when it's molded. Literally a dab of grease, push the pump in the bore and then the locking ring and it's finished.

The earlier ones had an external pump which meant more holes to drill in the inner fender and more fasteners to hold it together.

That sounds reasonable!

I know the newer model too - have it in my '73 Mach 1. Bought a new tank because the old one lost its lid but used again the original pump - I cleaned it up and it does the job like new  Seems like the easier and cheaper model...

But who cares - I have a 70 truck so he gets a 70 tank with pump :D

So I will give the above mentioned parts a try - thank you for taking part with me in this topic

That is the right pump for that bottle and yes you have to screw the nut on from the inside. It's a pain in the ass.

My 71 uses the pump that pushes in from the outside and has a multi-tanged spring/lock washer to hold it in.

Thanks!

That confirms that the '71 and up used another type of windhield washer reservoir and pumps - like this:

Have these combination also in my '73 Mach 1 originally...

Just to add to this, once you get it working you'll wonder why you bothered. :cuss:

The washer does sort of wash but it's not very effective and the driver side stream is difficult to see through until the wipers knock it aside. You'll see (maybe).
