1968 2WD F250 Rangoon Red

Post by 68RangoonRed250 »

I've been lingering on the forum for a couple years and decided to start my own project thread. I started this "project" just to fix the brakes on my Dad's 68 F250 which had become a shed ornament because a newer truck had taken its place on the farm. 2 years later the truck is completely broken down in my garage with hundreds of hours of blood, sweat and tears into the truck and a donor truck sitting in the driveway. It has become a labor of love and learning experience. The front cab mounts were shot and it had been riding on the floor pans for awhile. One of the rear spring hangers had lost a rivet and ripped in half and the spring rubbing on the bed. The radiator support was beyond repair and in need of replacement. These seem to be common issues for trucks from the northern country which lived on gravel roads. More pictures to come.

Close call on your poll.

Since the 240 was stock and “clean” go for that...

Or I’ve always thought an EFI 300 six out of a later truck would be a cool swap.

The 240 was hooked up to the t18 4 speed. The 360 has the C6. I will be keeping the t18 in the truck either way and have already bought the FE bellhousing for it. Here is a photo of the 240.

Good looking truck! I would be tempted to keep the 6 cyl. in it but I like the idea from Duckryder, fuel injection. Hope to see more progress on your truck!

If you are going to keep the six get the 300 efi exhaust manifold. It follows so much better and will allow you to run dual exhaust.

I got the 360 pulled and set up for further evaluation. Leaning towards the FE and swapping out the C6 for the T18.

So its been awhile since I have posted and I thought I would give an update. I don't get to work on the truck as much as I would like but have been doing mostly body, frame and suspension work when I can. As much as i didnt want to I removed all crossmembers, spring hangers, etc. from the rear due to concerns of addressing rust behind said brackets. Then painted the frame rails and all brackets and crossmembers with chassis saver. I also welded one of the spring hangers back together because the rivets failed and the leaf spring was riding on the bed when I started working on it :( the opposite side cab mount was also gone and what was left of the floor pan was riding on the frame rail. To say the least the truck was sitting a little off.

Awesome progress! When you go to do the cab mount, do not get the cheap LMC one piece stamped one. Spend the extra $ and get the Ford style one from Carpenter!

Thanks for the tip Paul! I did go with the OEM style mounts awhile ago and have been doing quite a bit of rust repair on the cab firewall area and one of the radiator mount points on the frame. Don't know if I'd ever do a truck that has been in Minnesota all its life again  I also got all the spring hangers bolted back on the frame and the dana 60 is back underneath as all should be again. It is nice to have a rolling truck again

Finally got around to taking the cab off and wire wheeling the front of the frame. New coils and shocks in front as well installed. I am working on getting the front of the frame cleaned up enough to put on chassis saver. Then some more cab repair and hopefully soon comes the time to put this thing back together
