Front brakes on a 1971 F250 4x4

Post by 69Highboy »

My brother is trying to redo the front brakes on his 71 Highboy, but since we gutted them 2 years ago he's running into problems. The current issue is my dad says the front drums don't look like they are for this truck. I had a reputable shop order front brake drums for a 1971 F250 4x4 with the Dana 44HD front axle, did they screw up or are these supposed to have the gap between the drum and the backing plate?

I have no idea what the p/n is, the box is long, long, gone. I specifically told them it was a 4x4, but who knows what they ordered.

In case anyone is wondering, I figured it out. The bumpside Dana 44HD used a rare, obsolete brake drum that was also used on 1960-64 Chevy K20 4x4's. I was able to find two which will be used on this truck, but that is why the other drum didn't work. It was the correct drum for a Dana 44 non-HD front end, but it wouldn't work on a 44HD.

I owned a 79' D44 HD disc brake front end, (slated for my 71' one ton) that I never got to bolt up.
Doesn't surprise me about the drums doing double duty as Dana was the "go to" drivetrain for ALL 3 major manufacturers back then.
Dana used to have a decent website and customer support.

https://www.dana.com/

And as much as I hate to there's a guy over on the "dark side" website named "PartsMonkey" (or parts something) that used to be a very good resource for finding hard to find part numbers like this. :fte:
