240 Inline 6

Post by jimmyj »

I have a 240 inline 6 that was rebuilt before I bought it by my brother so I know it was done
but now was sitting for over twenty years and was stuck I broke it lose and took the head off and one cylinder was rusty
My question is do I have to disassemble whole engine or just bring that one cylinder to BDC and ball hone the cylinder
I don't plan to do any thing wild with this thing just want it to run when done

Hello and welcome Jimmy,

Just to clarify, was this engine rebuilt 20 yrs ago then never started / broken in or rebuilt 20yrs ago with low miles? It will make a big difference in the answers depending. If the engine was rebuilt 20 years ago and never started or broken in I would most adamantly recommend full tear down to be inspected, machined as necessary and new assembly lubed distributed throughout the engine with fresh gaskets.

If the engine has been broken in and has miles under its belt but has sat for 20 yrs then I would say its a fine balance of skill and confidence but most anything can be hand massaged. But if your up for it go for it.
