Article 1224 - Accelerator Shaft Pin

To preclude field complaints of accelerator pin breakage, on subject vehicles, a new hardened spring pin, 67807-S is available to replace the present pin. 72255-S8.

Installation and Adjustment Procedure:
The following procedure should be used to install the new pin and adjust the accelerator linkage.
    1. Disconnect the accelerator return spring and the accelerator rod assembly from the fuel pump lever. (Note: At idle condition, the fuel pump lever should be approximately 15° to 17° rearward of the vertical centerline through the pivot.)
    2. Remove Pin 72255-S8 and install the new hardened spring pin, 67807-S.
    3. Check to assure that the accelerator stop protrudes through the floor mat and that the accelerator pedal bottoms against the stop. If accelerator pedal does not bottom against the stop because of interference with the doghouse, etc., shim the shoulder bolt using washer 44725-S8 until the pedal bottoms against the stop.
    4. Check to assure that the accelerator stop bolt is adequately tightened against the washer.
    5. With the accelerator pedal against the stop manually hold the fuel pump lever to the full open position. Adjust and reinstall the accelerator rod.
    NOTE 1:
    If engine is equipped with Cummins compressor, install the accelerator rod into the hole located 1.8 inches from the lever pivot.
    If engine is equipped with Bendix Westinghouse compressor, install the accelerator rod into the hole located 2.5 inches from the lever pivot.
    NOTE 2:
    If engine is equipped with a hand throttle and a Bendix Westinghouse compressor, install the accelerator rod as specified above and also install a bolt, lock washer and nut into the hole located 1.8 inches from the lever pivot. The bolt should be 5/16 inch diameter approximately 5/8 inch long.
    6. Reinstall the previously removed fuel pump lever return spring in the hole farthest from the pivot.
