Sealing a hole?

Post by hotrod ford »

I can get a gas tank for $10.00 at the pnp. Great price but it has a hole were they drained the fuel out of. The hole is the size of maybe a dime at the drivers lower corner. Has anyone ever plugged a tank hole before? I was thinking of a plug and jb weld. Any suggestions? Maybe I should just kepp lookin around for a tank.

I would have bought a tank without an extra hole but that's just me :)

For the repair:

1. flip the tank over so the hole is at the very top.
2. shove a water hose and rag in the filler neck.
3. turn on the water and adjust the flow so it doesn't overflow out the hole but it within an inch or so if it.
4. pick up the fallen over gas tank and hold it better while repeating 1-3
5. make a sheetmetal patch and mig weld it in place. More heat than speed so the weld flows and doesn't cause porosity.

Pretty simple and safe when you don't give the tank enough air to evaporate any gas in it.

What if you don't have a welder handy?

Honestly, go get a tank without the extra hole and concider the $10 wasted a valuable lesson. I would not epoxy patch a fuel tank in your cab. I did epoxy and sheet metal screw the mustang fuel tank pump plate on the top of my ranchero tank back in '96 and it's held up but then again, it's not in the cab...

The previous owner patched the tank in my truck. I was out of town and it "sprung a leak" while I was gone...in the garage. Needless to say, I will be purchasing a new tank, I just don't trust a patched tank anymore.

Has anyone bought an in-cab tank from LMC? They have one listed for my '72, and it looks pretty good.
