repair/replace steering wheel for 67

Post by kf7mjf »

So the steering wheel in my 67 is of course cracked. Are there ways to repair it, or should I look to replace it?

Kinda thought about doing something like that myself. Beats $190 for a repro I saw on Ebay

It's a VW site but a steering wheel is a steering wheel.

Repair. Pull it, rough it, epoxy, sand, repaint to original (two tone red/black in your case) and re-install after you clean up your column. It's a special beast and deserves to stay 'original'.

If you do it right, you probably won't have to do it again, as the steering wheel has shrunk about all it's going to in 45 years. You'll also appreciate it more knowing you fixed it yourself.

I think that's what I'm going to do, I need to get some pics of better condition wheels though so I can see the color scheme, mine is pretty worn.

I think Eastwood sells a kit for you to use to repair yours as well. I need to look into it myself for my 71.

cdeal28078 is right. The kit is sold through the Eastwood Company, and comes with everything you'll need for a restoration except for files, sandpaper, and of course, paint. I decided to buy an new wheel at first, but after it was painted to match (they only come in black) and I put it on, I didn't like it right away. It was made in Taiwan, and only weighs about half of what the original weighs. So for now, my new wheel stays on while I restore the old one, and eventually put it back on. Hope this helps!

Oh, heck, I was going to replace until I saw this thread. Mine is pretty cracked, but it's still strong. Phantom's right; it's done all the shrinking it's going to go through during my life. Maybe I will go ahead and repair it. If I screw it up, I can always get an aftermarket wheel (I was going to get a Grant Nostalgia Classic, but the original boat wheel is growing on me).

FYI.. Ford Falcons, I believe 63-70, use the same steering wheel as our bumps. I recall seeing a repro for around $100.

Interesting, didn't know that. I'm leaning towards the epoxy repair, just to try it out. I might pick up a beater junkyard steering wheel to experiment on.
