Speedo Squeak??

Post by 68 BB Bump »

I've just started getting a squeaking noise that gets louder the faster I go. :? I think it may be the speedometer or the cable.
Has anyone had or heard of this problem?
I don't hear it at slower speeds but becomes very noticable over 45mph.
If it is the cable, does the center pull out so it can be greased and what kind of grease works best?

Sounds like a cable to me. Last I knew....and its probably out of fashion now.... dry or paste graphite was the lube of choice. The center can pull out....but it might be difficult to remove or reinstall if you dont disconnect both ends.

I always pulled the cable and coated it with "Never Seize." The one in the can with the brush, not the spray. Doesn't take much.

I didn't have a squeak, but I had a whack-whack-whack sound. It ended up being my speedo going out on me. Put in a different speedo, no more noise, and the speedo needle holds solid (no bounce, like I had before).

I'm having that whack-whack-whack sound now, and the speedo needle is jumping in sync. I hop0e it is just the cable and not the whole speedo.
