Bucket seats with center consoles.

Post by Reverend_Jay »

Hey I was just wondering what people have done with their interiors as far as installing bucket seats and using or building custom center consoles. I'm doing this with my truck and wanted some ideas if anybody had any. Thanks.

Reverend_Jay,
Here's the Fordification factory Ford seat tutorial that Keith put together for us.
There's a lot of pictures and options here:

Finding a new bench is an easy swap. Buckets ... not so much. You will be fabricating brackets for buckets other than mustang buckets with the brackets Kieth detailed in the tech forums. I found some sweet (brown) buckets out of a 89 F350 that I am planning on recovering and mounting. Just have to build the brackets myself or modify the existing ones. I'm planning on posting my results when I get around to it. Have fun.

Jay, If you wanted to make it look some what nice you could have a custom one made by some car audio places. Alot of them will make you a custom center console out of fiberglass that also houses speakers.

I built one for my Freightliner day cab at work. (got tired of not having anywhere to stash junk! lol) I framed mine with 2x2 for strength, and sheathed it with 7/16" OSB for the sides and bottom. (had it laying around) If I was going to buy material for it, I would probably use 3/8" plywood. I used an part of an old cabinet door for the top, cut to fit of course. It was made from 1x12's best as I could tell. I bought a roll of carpet from the parts store and carpeted the exterior of the sides. I used a roll of nonslip drawer liner for the top covering. Works like a champ, and looks pretty good too! I will try to take some pics on my next working day and post them.

This was a simple design, just a box with a hinged lid. But the design/build steps would be similar for anything.

1. Measure the width of where you want it. (distance between seats.)
2. Measure how TALL you want it to be. If using a standard trans, make sure to account for the stick in 2, 4, and Reverse (assuming NP 235)
3. measure the length you want...just between seats or is it going up to the dash like in a car? Again, if it is just going between the seats, watch out for the gearshift with a manual trans.
4. Cut out a template from cardboard and test fit. make any needed corrections. Test fit again. Repeat until it is just right.
5. Cut it out of the material of your choice.

If you wanted to make it out of fiberglass, things are a bit different. Instead of making a template out of cardboard, you use the blue styrofoam, and cut/shape it with knives or a hot wire if you have one. (for detail work, a modified soldering gun works awesome!) Once you have the shape you want, start laying up your fiberglass. (Aircraft mechanic by trade, I like building with fiberglass!)

I build the work one out of wood since they were not paying for it, I just wanted it for my comfort at work...and I was not going to donate that much $$ to the company. They bought the carpet, 2x2's, hinges, and non slip. I donated the plywood. screws, and labor. Seemed fair! lol
When in doubt, hit the gas. It may not be the right answer, but at least it ends the suspense!!
