Restored heater box

Here is some picture of my restored heater box. Had some fun with the rivets. Don't pull the rivets until the nail pops off. Stop and cut them off with a Dremel tool. All new gaskets and rubbers.

Just looking at my picture in the post I noticed I may have put a foam rubber gasket in the wrong spot. I put it on the inside between the heater core and the backing plate. Maybe it should have been between the
backing plate and the firewall. This is the one that goes over the heater core tubes. Anyone Know.

I think it goes in the engine compartment on the firewall.

Thanks for the info I should have clarified myself. There is two square foam rubber pieces that go into the engine compartment on the heater core Pipe but there is a third foam rubber piece in the heater box rebuild kit. this is the
one. I do not know if it installed in the right spot.

I think you installed it correctly, my '71 has a foam gasket around the core-tubes in the heater box. I made another out of black foam pipe wrap, put between the box and firewall inside the cab, and then used the square pads between the firewall and heater hoses.
Just wanted to make sure no water gets in the cab.

Had to really dig deep to remember how i did this as I see several different ways the gaskets could be installed The schematic here show the gaskets going onto the outside of the heater plenum area, (between the heater plenum and firewall). Yet I put mine onto the outside, (engine bay) area of the firewall to seal out all outside air.

And here's how I did mine, (using permagum to seal the air from the engine compartment:

From a 30 year veteran of the HVAC trade I highly reccommend sealing around the copper tubes of the core where it meets the plenum housing. :wink:
