Sound deadening / heat insulation

Post by max03 »

The time has come to make the decision between replacing the original rubber style mat or upgrade to carpet, currently working on a 68 single cab btw. Anyone have any input on a reasonably decent brand of insulation that doubles as a sound eliminator? I know theirs several brands and most are sold by the foot or yard. I'd like to cover the flooring from firewall to Incab fuel tank along with both lower cab corner pockets, inside both doors, and under the headliner..

I did the entire area I believe you're describing using Eastwood's Thermo-Coustic material. I was very impressed by the quality and ease of cutting & installation. Would definitely recommend it. They have some pretty serious sales on it from time-to-time as well.

It's not finished here, I went all the way up the firewall. Didn't buy a fancy roller either, a gloved hand works just fine.

That looks perfect. How big of a roll did it take to successfully cover the floor and inside doors?

Thanks! It actually comes in sheets. 9 sheets per box, 18x30 each. I bought two boxes when they were on sale for $119, I used 11 or 12 sheets on the truck. So I'll grab another box next sale, and have plenty to do the Mustang as well! It cuts very easy with a utility knife, and I'd recommend taping the seams with a foil tape for a cleaner install. Best to do with the stuff a little cold, as it gets tacky quick. I just used Shurtape DC 181, a HVAC tape from Lowes/HD. Good luck

I am using FatMat sound deadner on my 67 and 70 which is 80 mil thick. I bought 100 square feet which was two rolls. I covered my entire floor like Tyler did in my 70 and it made a noticable difference. I am doing my entire cab, such as roof, rear wall, doors, and floor in my 67 so I am hoping for a bigger difference there.

Overall I think all the sound deaders are about the same. You mainly just have to figure out how thick you want it. I believe all of them are peel and stick also.

Call me crazy, but I used "Frost King" duct insulation that I got at Home Depot. It comes in a 12" X 15' roll and I used two rolls to do the entire cab floor and firewall. Cost is 18./roll plus a roll of aluminum tape @ 9.00. It stuck really well, was easy to cut and handle and looks just like the much more expensive stuff. Where I thought it may pull off, I used spray trim adhesive for added "stick." I got the idea after seeing someone use a similar product available at Lowes called "Peel and Stick." They did a nice job with it but the disadvantage is that it is only 6" wide. My only concern with this stuff is how it will hold up under automotive conditions...temp, dust etc...but it works on heat/air ducting in commercial applications, so I don't see where it will be a problem. I used Dynamat on my '40 Ford when I built it about 10 years ago, and it's held up well...but it cost a fortune! I'll let y'all know if any problems pop up, but this seems like an inexpensive alternative, unless there's something I don't know!

I used Raamat on my '55 car and will use it in the crew cab when I get to that point.

I would advise to stay away from those products that will absorb and trap moisture next to your floor - bad news. Anything with a foam or fiberglass core with allow this to happen, hence the reason you see the application-specific products using butyl rubber and the like.

BTW - I just got a sale email - Eastwood's Thermo-Coustic is on sale today only for $99/pack, it's normally $149! No, I'm not an Eastwood guy, but I do like the company, and when I saw the email, I remembered this thread and thought I'd pass it along.

Thanks for input Tyler, but I think you're wrong about the product I mentioned. In my experience it does not hold moisture, and I've seen in used on a lot of A/C jobs...but, I guess, to a certain extent you get what you pay for...I just suggested it for someone who might not want to spend 300.00 insulating their floor! They did make a few cars before DynaMat and we got along fine without it!....just sayin'

Are you guys using sound deadener on just the floor?

I've used Raammat bxt in the past with great success, now I'm looking to do all the pillars as well as the roof. But I'm not exactly sure what I'll be using to cover the deadener when I'm done, any suggestions?

hey max, i learned on another forum that you can go to lowes (or where ever) and in the home air duct ile theres air duct insolation that is exactly like the deadener we buy for our trucks. its a bit thinner and in smaller roles but soooo much cheaper. go look before buying the expensive stuff.

Went with FatMat from these guys VVVV free shipping...I just did an '88 Volvo 244...I don't think it would be great under the headliner due to excessive heat...works great though...
