If you're painting the column anyways; just sand down through however many layers of paint there are leaving it so you can clearly see each layer of paint apart from the next. Once you've hit bare metal one of the first colors of paint is going to be what ever color the column was from the factory. I'm not sure how they painted parts back then, but you should have a layer or two of primer followed by a layer or two of color. Anything after that first or second layer would be someone else's doing.
